The Hull Boatage Company Ltd can trace its history back to the early19th century although it was officially established in 1946 and is still a family business.
The Boatmen/Linesmen are often the first and last point of contact for any vessel entering or leaving a port safely.
The Hull Boatage Company can provide mooring services for any vessels entering or leaving from Hull's three working docks or Saltend Jetty BP Chemicals on a 24 hour basis. Today in 2021 we carry out all work for Siemens and BP in the Port of Hull as well as many others.

Reliability

The job of a Boatman can involve working at different times of the day and night. The often unpredictable nature of the job means that reliability and being in the right place at the right time is paramount. This is essential to provide a successful service to vessels arriving and sailing often over a 24 hour basis in the Port of Hull. Albert Dock built in 1863 has a lock of just 83 metres meaning many vessels are only able to arrive and depart an hour before  high water twice a day so punctuality and time is vital.

Training has been constant over many years. But since 2013 until the present day Captain Steve Dowler formerly of Briggs Marine has instructed the company in mooring and berthing techniques, manual handling port safety and life jacket maintenance.
In early 2015 the Siemens development of Alexandra Dock began. For several months we were employed by Global Shipping to assist the work being carried out by Lagans/Green Ports. This involved being in attendance for several months to moor & unmoor the Stemat piling barges  which were operating 12 hours a day 6 days a week from Alexandra Dock Hull. By July 2016 Berth 1 Greenports River Terminal had been completed and we carried out the first mooring operation on the new berth when the MV "Sandness" became the first vessel to discharge from there, quickly followed by the "Beltnes". Since October 2016 and into 2022 we have been involved in mooring many different vessels arriving for Siemens at Alexandra Dock. Most notably the two regular vessels the "Rotra Vente" and Rotra Mare which arrive weekly bringing the wind turbine towers.
